The Netflix January animation lineup kicked off the year with a strong selection of Japanese animation. While February looks to be a quieter month, January brought two major film releases that are now available on the platform.

Studio Ghibli’s Latest Masterpiece
One of the most anticipated films in the Netflix January animation lineup is The Boy and the Heron, the latest work from legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki. The film, which premiered in Japan on July 14, is now enriching Netflix’s growing Studio Ghibli collection.
Synopsis: When Mahito moves to the countryside, he encounters a mysterious grey heron that leads him into an enigmatic world where the living and the dead coexist.
A New Gundam Adventure
Also making its way to Netflix is Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, a continuation of the iconic Gundam franchise. Produced by Sunrise, this highly anticipated film debuted in Japan on January 26, 2024. It was added to Netflix quietly, currently available in English dub with subtitles.
Synopsis: After the Second Alliance-PLANT War, Gundam pilot Kira Yamato joins a peacekeeping organization dedicated to eliminating the remnants of Blue Cosmos.
